JIGGER AWARENESS DAY LAUNCH IN BUSIA

What is a Jigger?

Tunga penetrans is known as the jigger or sand flea. The head is angular, it has no comb of spines and the thoracic segments are narrow at the top. The female feeds by burrowing into the skins of its hosts. The abdomen becomes enormously enlarged between the second and third segments so that the flea forms a round sac with the shape and size of a pea. The impregnated female tunga embeds itself in the skin under the toenails and fingernails of man, where the resultant sores may fill with pus and become infected.

Major cause of jigger infestations is basically poor hygiene conditions.

Out of a population of 750,000 statistics from Ministry of Health indicate that Busia County has 23,000 people infested with jiggers. Of this statistic approximately a 1/3rd are school going children who end up missing school because they cannot walk or concentrate in class hence drop out of school.

The Busia County MP. Florence Mutua-Waingah is working closely in conjunction with the Ministry of Health at the National level, Ahadi Kenya, the community and the relevant interested stakeholders to eradicate Busia County of this flea that is basically caused by unhygienic conditions.
The Busia Jigger Awareness was kicked off on 4th October, 2013 in Bumala, Butula Constituency. The launch was attended by the County Deputy Governor HE Kizito Wangalwa, County Health Executive Hon. Dr. Siminyu, Ahadi Kenya CEO Mr. Kamau, TNA CEO Mr. Maitha, Gender Commissioner Mrs. Winnie Lichuma, Mr. Wanjohi from Ministry of Health among other stakeholders. This launch was the initiative of Hon. Florence M-Waingah who strongly feels school going children should not miss school because of jiggers. Infested people who constitute part of the working force is not working because of jiggers.
Ahadi Kenya gave 1500 shoes and the Ministry of Health supported with the treatment. Emphasis was on the community to observe hygiene since the jiggers would still recur even with the distribution of shoes and the treatment given if they did not observe cleanliness.
My office is continously treating jiggers in areas where information is availed and a huge number have been reached. We hope to totally eradicate this flea in Busia County.
A big thank you to all our supporters and more so Ahadi Kenya and the CHW's who always volunteers to assist with treatment.
